Giant Flowers on A Tree

On the road to Sabah Times, there was a tree with many, many, many flowers! At 7.09am this morning, the low sun cast a shadow on the tree ...

So I also went back at 8.43am (lighting makes a lot of difference; although the first photo with the interesting shadows gave a nice mood to the scene).

A lot of big flowers ...

Red, white, ...

... and pink. Hmmm ... something's not quite right here ...

... what's all those plastic ties doing there???

ALL THE FLOWERS WERE FAKE ONES!!!

A close-up showing the flowers tied to the tree branches.

So you don't have to rush to see the "Forever Flowering Tree" in Kota Kinabalu.

Cloudless Mt Kinabalu

On the 24th morning, I woke up to a cloudless sky over Mt Kinabalu at just before sunrise (6.14 am).

The satellite photo (http://weather.is.kochi-u.ac.jp/SE/00Latest.jpg shows the current view) showed no significant cloud cover over Sabah; thus the really HOT few days.

Continuing to zoom in with the telephoto lens converter ...

... to the closest view.

Mt Kinabalu is still a great feature for Kota Kinabalu.

Bonding With Gaya Street - Kota Kinabalu

I went down to the City center this morning to have a look at the "Bonding With Gaya St." event ...

... of course, there was the official launching with the dignitaries and speeches ...

 ... a couple of antique rides ...

... and the ubiquitous volkswagens. Note the long banner in the background ...

... almost all the Kota Kinabalu shoppers appeared on the banner!

A very nice comprehensive timeline for Kota Kinabalu (from 1865) was put up on the windows of the Mandarin Hotel ...

... drawing the curious (including, of course, yours truly). I must say that there was a lot I did not know, or had forgotten about the history of our fair city.

Good write-ups and many old photos ...

... here's one of Jesselton in the 1910s ...

... another one from 1910s ...

... to Kota Kinabalu in the 1970s.

After WWII, Bond Street was renamed Gaya Street. Note the War Memorial on the road divider.

Here's another view of the Memorial ...

... and a view this morning (this "Memorial" was a rattan replica!).

Chop Teo Seng (mentioned in my 2 February 2012 posting as one of the old shops still remaining in Gaya Street) today ...

... and in the "yester-year".

So what was this corner shop in the old days?

It was United Trading Company. I remembered my mom buying cloth from this shop. Didn't the proprietors opened the KK Emporium? I could be (and most likely am) wrong!

So what about this corner shop location?

It was the Phenix Stores (why the "s"?) in them old days. It was the place to buy your musical instruments ( I couldn't afford anything from there in my youth).

I am sure there were many more things I missed. Kudos to the organisers!

Kota Kinabalu City Day - 02 February 2012

Kota Kinabalu City Day was celebrated today with a parade at our Padang Merdeka. I noted that the Natikar Building re-development was completed. I last took a photo of it on 31 August 2010.

Our Kota Kinabalu Mayor led his contingent to the Padang.

Well-drilled marchers. The contingents were from the City Hall departments, local Kota Kinabalu  schools and organisations.

The DBKK Clean-up gangs with the "bugs" in the middle!

Our DBKK garbage truck and a backhoe (what relation has DBKK and backhoe?).

Both backhoe and the garbage truck needed help from the "bug" to get up the step!!!

DBKK had headhunters? Anyway, he should have "hunted" the deer rather than humans.

Our Mayor in his fine robe.

I didn't stay around for the judging for the winners.

Written permission needed to use the "turfing area" of this padang!

While at Gaya Street, I saw the Kota Kinabalu "branch" of the Kim Hing Lee fresh-pork noodles ( I took a photo of the Inanam shop on 22 July 2011).

I must confess I had no recollections of this shop/stall in the 1980s ( I did have quite a few lunches at this shop during those years).

The chinese lanterns strung across Gaya Street for Chinese New Year.

One of the few remaining chinese grocery shop in Gaya Street.

An eatery I have not seen before ...

... The Wishbone; where CHEF meant Classic, Healthy, Economic and Fast!!!
