KK Food Bakery Bake Fiesta 2014

Logo copied from their website.

Last Saturday, I was at Suria Sabah and visited the KK Food Bakery Bake Fiesta 2014.

At the main stage, the Fonterra people were promoting their "very stretchable" mozarella cheese with a pizza demo. The (mmmm) larger-sized fella said he had been making (& eating?) pizzas for 20 years!

One crowded stall was this one giving out free wine tasting. The best wine offers were already sold, so I walked on ...

... to frozen local kuih (unusual to see).

Why do the fattening things come in such delicious varieties?

This stall took some of the stuff sold at those Taiwanese Night Markets for a franchising business.

A very pretty ice-shaving machine.

A vegan stall (just to be complete, though of little interest to me).

Out for lunch at 4pm? And why didn't they eat their own cooking???
Just joking, I have ate at the restaurant before. Their menu is good and prices reasonable.

This is the one for a meat-eater like me. One of my favourite eating out places.

Some cooking academy students strutting their stuff.

If you have this strange desire to dress up as a chef ...

... or else you can join the cosplay gang ...

... uh, you can keep "her" lah. Though that kid seemed to disagree!

"Book Fair" September 2012

There was advertised, a book fair (September 1 - 9). I paid it a visit, though without much expectation.

There was a stall from the publisher of legal books ...

... Moy, a publisher of comics ...

... the usual Grolier stall (my parent spent some of their hard earned cash buying the encyclopedias from them in them old days) ...

... an organisation trying to preserve the native Kadazan-Dusun language ...

... the Sabah State Library encouraging all to read (one basic feature of a library is that we BORROW the book ... so why would all the stalls SELLING books want the library stall here???). I know that the state library was one of the promoters of this book fair.

Another organisation preserving the Kadazan language ... are they competing?

The Times Bookstore had a stall; its better to visit their shop upstairs or at 1Borneo. A good selection of books in the shop, but books are cheaper at Popular or Harris. There were a few other stalls selling textbooks and stuff; so you can see why I had low expectation of such "book fairs".

The other stalls mostly had nothing to do with books (though all had their purposes) ... here was one helping those in Palestine ...

... a coin saving box for RM5 ...

... those toys must be very SMART! They ran away! Who would want to work on a sunday? ...

... a beauty college? ...

... Celcom! Mobile phones with their games and songs and sms and mms and ringtones and ... must be better than books! ...

... here you could learn hair removal! Perhaps you could read during the removal procedure?

The two end stalls were used for a blood donation drive.

Anyway, I did buy 1 book from the legal books publisher in the first photo above. The book "Your Rights and The Law" is written for the layman and answer those questions a member of the public would ask when they get into unfamiliar "legal" situations. One such situation mentioned in the introductory chapter was "If you are stopped by a person claiming to be a policeman in plainclothes; what are your rights? Can you ask him to show some kind of authorisation?".

The tag "18" was for the lunch I tapau from Kuo Man at the Food Court.

The beautiful day in Kota Kinabalu viewed from the balcony at the Food Court.

Turning round to the adjacent Jesselton Mall development (last photo taken was the last photo in the 26 March 2012 Posting) ...

... no a lot of progress visually. It looked like piling was in progress.

Times Bookstore - Book Fair 2011

I like books and reading, so I could never resist going to any book fair. There is one going on at the Lower Ground, Suria Sabah. It's organised by Times Bookstore during the period 29 April to 8 May 2011.

As usual, the advertising was more exciting than reality; they said discounts up to 90% and books as cheap as RM3 each. I overheard one woman saying she couldn't find any book with the 90% discount sticker. I presumed there must be "one" at least, although I never saw it.

But it was possible to get some value-for-money discounted books; if you were willing to look through ALL THEM BOOKS!

I found a copy of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (bought for RM104). It was a 2,483 page monster. The good thing about this one was that it was compiled and re-written in more modern english by The Royal Shakespeare Company (the RSC performed the plays). So it was much easier to read.

The FUNNY COINCIDENCE was that, just last week, I bought this other book at the Harris Bookstore. It covered the historical period of Shakespeare and the various mysteries about the man. For example, no one knows what he actually looked like? The usual portrait was one called The Chandos portrait (the balding guy as above); but no definitive proof that this was Shakespeare. In 2009, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust unveiled the Cobbe portrait, saying that that was Shakespeare (a younger and more handsome man with a full head of hair)!

The Borneo Orchid Show 2010 - Kota Kinabalu

I visited The Borneo Orchid Show (The Jewels of Borneo) this afternoon. Entry was RM2 per person (very reasonable).

It's being held on 1 - 5 October 2010 at Suria Sabah. The main entrance to the show is on the 6th floor.

I am no orchid enthusiast; neither knowing how to grow them nor what they are really about. It was a good photographic opportunity. The announcement that The Sumazau Slipper Orchid had been nominated as The Official Sabah Orchid intrigued me to find out more (what it looked like especially).

Slipper orchids are called Paphiopedilums (short-form Paph). The "Class" refers to the exhibition categories ( I saw Class 80, so there were at least that many categories exhibited).

This was what the plant looked like.

A close-up view; the 2 wings are like the arms of the sumazau (local kadazan ethnic dance) dancer.

From another angle; it did looked like a slipper.

There were all kinds of orchids (flower size, colour, and shapes).

Pretty white ones ...

... skinny yellow one ...

... bigger yellow ones ...

... spotted ones ...

... spidery ones ...

... yellow with purple fringe ones ...

... dark magenta ones ...

... yellow spotted ones.

This was Best in Section and Best Plant of The Show. The trophies were on the small table. The Biscuit Tin Box was asking for RM2 from those taking photos! Since the lady explained it was for "tambang" (contribution towards the transport and handling for bringing the big plant from Penampang to the show), I was happy to contribute.

On the 5th floor, there were exhibits from some organisations. This was one by Japan (?).

There was a poster advertising The Okinawa International Orchid Show to be held on 5 Feb 2011.

Every official function has 1Malaysia.

The Sabah Agriculture Park's exhibit. The park is in Tenom and holds the sumazau slipper orchid.

The Winning Exhibit was by The Sabah Parks ...

... it had orchids amongst the Rafflesia flower, civet ...

... hawk or eagle ...

... a python ...

... even a waterfall ...

A panorama of The Sabah Parks Exhibit.

I remembered a visit to Orchid De Villa; where the guide said the bigger blooms are commercial orchids (for sale). The wild orchids were generally small. The farm had a jungle trail where you can see the various types of orchids.

If you are able to; a visit to The Borneo Orchid Show is definitely recommended.

Apart from the orchids (much much more than in my photos), there were photos of 100 native species of Borneo Orchids ...

... a Painting Gallery; where you can get your portrait done (even caricatured) ...

... and for those who believe they have the "Green Thumb"; orchids for sale.

UPDATE (4 October 2010) : I read in The Daily Express that Sabah had 1,200 of the estimated 1,600 orchid species in Borneo and Mt Kinabalu alone had 800+ of that.
