Tawau Visit

I went to Tawau on 30 September for 2 days (work-related).

It was a wet, dull and very cloudy morning. This was the panorama from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (T1); Mt Kinabalu was cloud-covered. The 2 structures (left and right) were part of the roof awning (distorted by the panorama software to make the horizon straight when stitching together the 3 photos).

We were flying between the cloud layers (23,000 ft if I heard the pilot's announcement correctly). This was lower than the usual altitude, so the fuel consumption would be higher.

The clouds at ground level were impressive.

Approaching Tawau.

Tawau Airport is situated in the middle of an oil palm estate.

A view of Tawau Airport from the plane.

A panorama taken from the hotel window (facing West if the compass in my handphone is correct).

Visitors to Tawau always enjoy seafood dinners.

I took a photo of dinner (from the table using the maximum zoom - approx. 680mm - thus the grainy outcome). I was informed that soft shell crabs were cruelly induced to moult (thus soft shells) by breaking their legs!

Mantis Shrimp (farm grown in individual plastic bottles). This would be judged very cruel by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (River Cottage program on Asian Food Channel). He said (referring to the slaughtering of his own farm grown animals for their meat) that as meat-eaters, we must ensure that the animal has had a good life (ie live free and well) before becoming our food.

The 1 thing I noticed each time I visited Tawau was the additional hotels. This is the Promenade Tawau.

The old hotels are conventional-designs (De Choice - used to be Merdeka in them old days).

The newer ones begin to show some "design".

A small one (Kingston Hotel) trying to look different.

A bigger one (Shervinton Hotel - opened September 2010) trying to look different.

Then The Monaco Hotel; what's different you ask?...

... there were 3 hotels in that one block (Prince Hotel, Heritage Hotel).

There was Tawau's W&L Fastfood!

Here's one, some of you may find humorous (it's not the"Tranining"). I will not say more as I don't want to be beaten up by them TaeKwonDo fellas!
